Steelhead Dissections + Egg to Fry Programming

This spring, we are bringing the outdoors in the classroom with Steelhead Dissections and Egg to Fry programs. Regional 5th graders dissect extra steelhead from the Wallowa Hatchery and learn how incredible these organisms are!

Also, some classes raise steelhead eggs to the fry stage, then release fry into an Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) approved lake.

Partnerships make this work possible and include collaborating with the Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife, ODFW, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Oregon Chapter of the America Fisheries Society, and Anderson Perry. BIG thanks to these partners!

Youth Voice : Qualitative Data
Last fall, we began collecting qualitative data from youth, including their observations, questions, and perspectives of where water comes and gos. Check all the qualitative data here, and a few examples below.

Quantitative Data

Our quantitative data is up to date through 2024 on this spreadsheet and is being uploaded to the IDAH20 database now.

STAY TUNED!!
We have some GIS students working on an ArcGIS Story Map!

Teacher Workshop

In late February, we facilitated a "Nature Journaling and Water Education" workshop that included the Aquatic WILD curriculum.

This workshop was offered in partnership with
OSU Extension - Outdoor School,
Greater Oregon STEM Hub, and the
Oregon Natural Resources Education Program.
Look for more of these workshops including Project WET next year!

Professional Development

To keep our Community Science program top notch, our Community Science Coordinator, Carrie, is enrolled in a professional development program with OSU Extension - Outdoor School called Learning In Places. Through this opportunity, we are exploring new programming like increasing family engagement, collecting community qualitative data, and Schoolyard Investigations.

Funding Proposals

We submitted several grant proposals to help keep our youth exploring and investigating our watershed - outdoors and hands-on!

A HUGE thank you to EVERYONE who shared a letter of support. We're incredibly grateful to ALL of our amazning partners!

Now cross your fingers : )

Winter Schoolyard Investigations

To keep watershed investigations flowing in winter, the Community Science Project piloted Schoolyard Investigations this year with Cove 7th Graders and Central 5th Graders. Learning in Places is inspiring these Schoolyard Investigations.

Watch out for Master Water Stewards Training later in spring!
Winter Schoolyard Investigations

To keep watershed learning flowing through the year, the Community Science Project has been experimenting with walking schoolyard investigations. Island City 5th Graders, Cove 7th Graders, and Central 5th Graders have been helping us with this new program. This work is being inspired by our work with Learning in Places.

If you are a teacher and want to investigate our watershed from your schoolyard, please reach out! [email protected]
Quantitative and Qualitative Data!
It's winter, so that means data entry.

Most of our water investigations lead to numerical or quantitative data. To explore our quantitative data, check our Data webpage here.

This fall we began collecting qualitative data, specifically observations and questions from our Community Scientists. These observations and questions are guiding our future watershed investigations!
This work is being inspired by our work with Learning in Places.

We'll be uploading more 2024 data throughout this winter!

Winter is time to keep funds flowing!
If you come across funding opportunities, please pass them our way. It takes a village! THANK YOU!
